Default Do I need to replace Front Exhaust Tube?

I have 01 Maxima SE, 45K mi. About 8 months ago I got a CES, my mechanic told me it was P0420 and I should take it to a Nissan Dealership. I did, they reprogrammed the ECU free of charge. A few months ago I got a CES again, and it was P0420 again. I didn’t have time to take it to the dealer and the CES went away for a month and just came back a few weeks ago. I took it to the dealer and he tells me that along with P0420 there were some other codes and after extensive troubleshooting it’s not a problem with a Catalytic Converter.
I’m being told that I need to replace the Front Exhaust Tube and the Top O2 censor. Also the exhaust system needs to be cleaned. Total price: $1200 without cleaning.
I told them I don’t have that much money, and if they just replace the catalytic converter that’s still under the warranty and not try to screw me. Their answer is that Nissan will deny their claim based on what they’ve found. So I took my car back and paid $120 for diagnostics.
My question is to all you Maxima enthusiasts does this make sense at all?
And if it does, what are the part #’s that need to be replaced? I can’t find anything that’s called a Front Exhaust Tube or a Top O2 sensor. And what should be the approximate price of getting the parts from a mechanic and having him do the job?
Thank you for your help!

The front exhaust tube has the catalytic converter in it. They are trying to screw you. You do need it replaced and it is covered 8 years or 80,000 miles.

Is this the same solution for 2007 Nissan Altima 2.5SL (4 cyl).
Basically the car started making a rattling noise a week or so ago.

I was told that it would cost about $600+ to replace the Front-end exhause tube.

The repairs would include the following parts:

20010JA000 (Front End Exhause Tube)

269119U00 (Gasket)
269265J00 (Gasket).

How many miles do you have on your 2007 Altima?

65K miles...
But I have the preferred GOLD 100K miles warranty on the Car which is crazy that it does not cover repairing and replacing those parts...

Take it to a muffler shop and have them weld the metal bracket back on to the pipe. The weld cracks on the back of the bracket and causes the rattle. You can probably get them to do it for less than $50.00.

I spoke to the Nissan Service Tech guy who looked at it, and he basically said the same thing, that it needed to be welded, and that a muffler shop could do it. Thank Jesus that I did not pay out the $643.00 they were asking for...

Ok, here is an update on this issue. I called Nissan Consumer Affairs and open a case file. I was told since more than 30 days passed since the service day, I'll have to take the car back to the dealership to have diagnostics performed again.
So, I took the car back to the dealer, told them that i had opened the case with Nissan and gave them the case #. I got a call at the end of the day that they checked the car again, the only code that's showing up is P0420 (all the other codes that they showed on my previous visit had mysteriously disappeared). They tested the catalytic converter Bank 1 but it passed all the tests, they also called Nissan and confirmed that the CAT doesn't need to be replaced and that I need the Front Tube Assembly replaced.
I called Nissan back myself, talked to the rep and she agreed with me that if i'm getting P0420 any repair falls under the warranty. She said that the case will be assigned to a Nissan Regional Service rep and he will call me back.
Well, I just got a call from my friendly Regional rep who is telling me that having P0420 doesn't necessarily means that it's a catalytic converter, that Nissan recommends the Front Tube Assembly replaced first. Told me there’s a bulletin on the Front Tube Assembly that doesn’t have a code. And since the catalytic converter passed all the tests, they won't authorize replacing the cat and I have to replace the front tube, which is covered under the power train warranty that i don't have anymore.
And if the code comes back after the front tube is replaced, they'll take a look at the cat again.
So, where does it say that the cause of code P0420 is the Front Tube Assembly and not the catalytic converter? Has anyone else had the Front Tube replaced with this same code and never had the code come back?
What do I do at this point?

The front exhaust tube and the b1 catalytic convertor are the same part on that year maxima. You can't get them sperate. It is covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles.

Yup... I have his headers on my '04... good thing I installed them when I did, as my pre-cats were very close to failing.

We had the same problem and got the same $1200 estimate from Nissan. Another place told us it was the catalyic converter failing. We had an aftermarket catalytic converter put on (total cost about $300) and bought a code reader to clear the code. The P0402 code recurs about once per fill up but I just clear it and keep driving. The car runs fine.

Does your state have emissions testing? You won't pass with just clearing the code.
