Setting engine timing
Hello,
I have a 2002 Nissan Frontier 4 cyl that needs a distributor replaced. I can replace the distributor, but I'm not sure how to set the timing on this engine. I have plenty experience timing a small block Chevy, but I imagine this is computer controlled, and thus a different animal. If anyone knows how to set the timing, or knows how to by-pass the computer and set it manually, I would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks. |

Without CONSULT-II
1. Run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no-load. 2. Rev engine two or three times under no-load, then run engine at idle speed for about 1 minute. 3. Turn off engine and disconnect throttle position sensor harness connector. 4. Start engine and rev it (2,000 to 3,000 rpm) two or three times under no-load, then run engine at idle speed. 5. Check ignition timing with a timing light. M/T: 20°±2° BTDC A/T: 20°±2° BTDC (in “P” or “N” position)

i like to set my timing by ear. timing light is good to achieve the starting point though - 20BTDC.

If you live in a state that is still doing tailpipe testing. Setting by ear can get you into trouble on your emissions inspection(if you are too far off).

i can see that.. no testing here so that doesn't enter my thought.

OK, here's a stupid question. Doesn't chaning the timing (advancing or retarding) potentially damage sensors and or void the warranty?
