odometer reads 999999 and nall gauges are inop.
I have a 1998 Frontier 2.4L 5mt 4x4 SE .
When I drove it home all the gauges were pinned at full and the odom read 9999999. I drove it home and unplugged the battery for 15 min. Plugged it back in and the gauges were normal and so was the odom. So I thought nothing of it. I woke up this morning to warm the truck up for work and there pinned again. I drove it to work 10 miles and shut it off. Went out to check it again . Put the key in and started it and the gauges are normal now. What gives???? It now does this everyday. Water temp reads full hot Gas gauge reads full and odometer reads 9999999. Coincidentally the AIR Bag light is flashing aswell. tried the key on off 3 time deal and that didnt clear the air bag light. |

Since your description leads one to believe that your Instrument Panel seems to be affected by heat (connections contract) and cold (connections expand) - I would reach behind the Instrument Cluster and make sure all the connection are firmly in place. I pulled (below) a copy of your Instrument Panel from your Service Manual Section EL - Electrical System. Hope this helps...

Well Mr Wizard , we are going to see just how proficient you are at cluster repair, LOL.
I have shipped my cluster off to you via Westphall Automotive of Salem Oregon. I paid for the 5 yr warranty. Thank you in advance. |

Cause is bad solder joints, especially to the large (long black) IC chip.
Solution is to have any proficient electronics technician (does NOT have to be auto) to resolder. You can do this yourself...need some basic soldering skills, flux and IPA to remove flux once done. But best left to an electronics technician that knows how to resolder bad joints. Do NOT disassemble the speedo (eg. do NOT remove the needle). All contacts are accesible. To test, identify the "BATT", GROUND and IGNITION contact screws..clearly marked on the flexible printed circuit of the cluster housing. Match these with the same screw mount holes of the speedo unit. (The speedo unit is also the brains behind running the other gauges..thus why they go haywire). GROUND to GROUND and +12V to the BATT wil simulate the speedo in normal mode (switched off). Then jumper 12V to the IGNITION to simulate turning the key. You should see the ODOMETER display (it may be 999999..) . Switch off and then start cleaning up the solder contacts. In my case, I did not have to replace ANY components (such as the two NTE152 transistors). Ensure the IPA is dried off before powering on. You will get erratic odometer readings. But in my case, this completely restored functionality (including the current mileage). This issue is common to many Nissan's. In my case it was for a '98 Maxima..first intermittently and then 100% always 999999, with gauges pegged and, when running, the speedo and tacho barely moving (tacho would flutter off the stop). Ensure you carefully remove the speedo instrument from the housing, noting the flexible cable at top. If in doubt, send the whole cluster off to a relevant shop. But if you get the speedo out..it's easy for any circuit board technician to fix by resoldering. |
