'16 Frontier 2.5 VIAS rattle?
Hi all, just bought a second hand Frontier. It's a king cab with a 2.5 engine and 5 speed manual trans. I was real happy with the purchase, price paid, and the truck... for about three hours.
When I got it back home I noticed what my brain recognized as a "bad noise." I'd place the sound I'm hearing somewhere between ping and a lifter tick. The noise seems to occur from about 1900 RPM and makes itself very known by 2200 RPM. The sound seems to fade out or gets drowned out by engine noise by the time I'm turning 3000 RPM. The rattle occurs in all forward + reverse gears. The frequency of the rattle does not seem to increase linearly with engine RPM like most things would (lifter tick, exhaust leak, pinging on one cylinder). The noise is slightly more pronounced with medium to heavy throttle but does not increase in volume with throttle applied like an exhaust leak. It also occurs under very light to light throttle, albeit a tiny bit quieter. FWIW I'm a pretty mechanically and electrically inclined fella. I've worked as an EE for Honda, build my own amplifiers, and spent the last year boosting an air cooled VW buggy and big block swapping an old Chevy for no good reason at all. So I'm not afraid to turn a wrench or use an o-scope. But I need to know what to look for since I have no experience with these trucks. I'll plug my reader when I get a chance and see if I have any hidden codes. I'll also see if I can recreate the noise with no engine load. I tried earlier this evening and didn't seem to succeed. Can anyone offer any advice or anecdotal experience here? I'm not ready to panic just yet but I'm pretty peeved that my nearly new truck is going to cost me time and/or money immediately. |
