Do you have fuel pressure? Sounds like a bad fuel pump

Have you checked the timing belt? I have seen a few Xterra with broken timing belt.

Also check the rotor in the distributor. I have seen plenty that the screw had fallen out.

Yep, that screw loosened and fell out of the 1-year-old distributor I had installed in my daughter's '98 Pathfinder, she had to get a tow and pay for a "repair" (she was about 90 miles away when this happened, on a Sunday afternoon, in middle of Arizona).

All I did to install that new distributor was install it and set the timing, never had that rotor screw out or loose. Hopefully the shop that fixed it tightened it correctly, and used Loctite or something.

I did fight and get a refund from the supplier as distributor had a 10-year warranty. Obviously she couldn't ship the distributor back and wait a week or more for replacement, vehicle rental costs would've exceeded any warranty help.

I explained to supplier that had the distributor not gone bad, then no tow and no repair bill would've been needed.
