Default 1987 Hardbody trans fluid?

Hey all. I'm brand new to this page, and I have been searching for what to actually use for auto trans fluid in my '87 SE V6 2wd. Dexron II is the recommended fluid from the old days, and I have seen so many different answers on what is compatible. Also it has 203,000 miles, so I'm hesitant to put the Valvoline synthetic in it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Dexron III/Mercon ATFis okay to top off the fluid, but it's not recommended for a full service, as it can cause the valves in the valve body to stick. Nissan recommends NissanMatic Type "D" ATF, which is Dexron II. Most synthetics will work just fine, as well, so long as they say they are recommended for Dexron II or NissanMatic "D" ATF applications. My personal choice is Valvoline Maxlife ATF.
