good buy, or walk away? 98 Frontier
There's a guy selling a 1998 frontier 4x4 ext cab, with a rebuilt motor. Seems like he did it himself and the motor has an oil pressure issue.
For $1,250, is this a manageable problem to take on? Listing states: "comprehensive engine rebuild- NEW rings, seals, gaskets, pistons and bearings, timing set, waterpump, belts, plugs, cap & rotor, and wires all around. BRAND new match set of tires, brakes got about 3/4 left. HOWEVER, its got bad oil pressure, i suspect the oil pump needs to be re-primed. it will start and run fine, but will need the oil pressure issue to drive." Listing also comes with a totaled (major damage on front left only) single-cab frontier with same motor... |

if the oil pressure is bad that might have already damaged the rebuilt engine.

Wouldn't the oil pump quickly re-prime by itself? Maybe it's just an oil pressure sender issue.
OK, here's what I'd do: I'd get a screw-in type mechanical pressure gauge, go over to see the truck, and screw that in and see if there really is oil pressure. Even if the gauge is pipe thread, you can typically screw in enough without forcing it to get a reading, or get a metric adapter (sorry, I don't know the Frontier thread size). You should see about 10 psi for each 1000 rpm. Try posting your question at ClubFrontier.org, gets way more viewers than this site. This 1998 Frontier is 4-cylinder, correct, like no 6-cylinders for 1998? Last edited by Cusser; 03-13-2014 at 05:51 PM. |
