Default 99 frontier not running

99 frontier won't start back after two minute shut off. Mechanic stated fuel pump. $327 pump. Put on started ran 5 minutes shut off to button up. Checked startup after half of button up ..no start. Starts when sprayed. So no fuel. Retired Nissan man says ECU. Lot of info on web says many other things. Anyone got/had the same? Please help!

There are many things that can cause that problem. Do you have 4 or 6 cylinders? have you check for fuel pressure at the injectors? do you have spark at the spark plugs? is the engine light ON? if it's ON what code? We need all answers to help you diagnose the problem, otherwise you will be just guessing what the problem is.

Confirm power to the fuel pump and confirm a good ground at the fuel pump. If you have those, you may have a bad new pump, which wouldn't be a surprise if it's an aftermarket fuel pump. If you don't have power to the fuel pump, check the fuel pump relay and if power exists at the fuel pump relay. You can jump the switch side of the relay to check that circuit.

Relay supposedly checking good, mechanic says tests good and can feel clicking in hand when switch on. Only gets 6 volts at fuel pump. Hauling truck to another mechanic today to let look at- his gut is bad fuel pump and he is gonna drop tank and start from there. Anyone else got any ideas?

That is a BS response - 6 volts is not enough. The FP gets 12V directly from relay M-46 pin 5 and 3 (pin 5 is on the feed side). You have a separate 15A fuse in the main under dash fuse block for the fuel pump. If that fuse is good, the relay is up in the engine compt - pull it out and jumper pins 3 and 5 together. this should cause the FP to run and pressurize the fuel rail.

^^agree^^ If you only have 6 volts at the pump, you have a circuit issue, not a pump issue. There could be too much resistance in the wire somewhere or perhaps even within the relay.

Could fuel pump ( new) be bad causing the 6 volt reading. Others have offered idea of crank pos sensor, throttle pos sensor, and also injectors? More advanced mechanic to look at today. Starting at fuel pump and working forward. Will post results.

Finally running! Last guess time! Bad fuel sending unit! Factory recall for this and gas tank. Plastic cracks and lets copper corrode and short out. Will give u a 6 volt reading! Much thanks to local mechanic and Tri-Cities Nissan in Johnson City,TN. P.S. this short out has been known to take out fuel pump!
