Instant death to my alternator!? Why is this happening??
I have a 98 Nissan frontier and after I changed my alternator they instantly die.
History: 2 years ago I replaced my alternator but broke the wire harness clip so I wired the voltage regulator by hand. It worked fine for 2.5 years then my alternator failed. I then installed 2 new alternators and they failed instantly after starting the engine. Currently the alternator is putting out 20 volts. Would flipping the positive and negative on the voltage regulator of the alternator cause the regulator to instantly fail? Are there any other ideas on what would be causing this?? |

Any kind of reverse polarity is usually sudden death on electronic components. For the alternator field to turn full on almost hints at a short. You need to look at your wiring connection to make sure voltage is going where it belongs (pins 3 from the ig switch thru the light, pin 1 and 4 from the battery directly thru fuses and links) pin 2 is ground. the Vreg is internal in the alternator so it's a pretty simple circuit.

Problem solved!
I ended up figuring it out. The positive and negative were flipped on the voltage regulator. I wired it wrong... Now everything is working well.
