Cool 2007 Frontier high speed intermittant vibration

My 2007 Frontier with 84,000 miles is starting to vibrate while doing 60-65 mph. in cruise control. The vibration is intermittant lasting 3-5 seconds and sounds like you are going over fine rumble strips. Not affected by slightly steering right or left. No vibes in the steering wheel but just a low grade hum when it vibrates. Possibly from gearbox or C/V joints? Just prior to noticing the problem I used 4 wheel high. The problem is in 2 wheel high. Worried that maybe trans is not completely disengaged from 4 wheel. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Chuck E.

This morning before going on the highway I engaged and dis-engaged 4H several times to free up the mechanism so to make sure it was fully out of 4H. It seemed to help and only experienced the washboard vibration one time on my 10 mile trip home on the highway. I am still just guessing but I have to start somewhere. I'm worried that I could be doing a lot of damage and transmission fixes are extremely expensive. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks, Chuck E.

I have almost 75K miles on mine, but haven't had any of your experiences.
When you say you switched back to 2H, did the 4WD lights go out on the dash? I am on 2 Frontier specific forums but haven't heard of this issue that I can remember. But that doesn't mean there aren't others out there with your issues.

I was just reading some of the radiator coolant/transmission cross contamination issues. One of the symptoms was tranny slippage. Could be a possibility. Check the coolant in the radiator to see if it looks like it could be contaminated with transmission fluid.

MDAWG,
The dash indicator shows that I am in 2W. I did check trans and coolant for cross contamination and both fluids are clean.
I was hoping to find someone with knowledge of this type of symptom before I talk to the dealer service guy. It might not have anything to do with 4WD but it seems to point to that direction.
Thanks for the reply, Chuck E.

Good luck. I hope it is something simple and cheap since you are passed your warranty.

Check the u-joints and carrier bearing I've heard of a couple of issues with this. Also check the tranny mounts closely.

tech22,
Heard it this AM and it has gotten worse. Seems to be coming from driver front and still is intermittent. My thoughts are now possibly spindle bearing. Would this make sense to you?
Thanks, Chuck E.

Just to thank all that have helped and maybe this info can help others in the future. I lifted the car to look for any obvious problems and did find that the left wheel would rock top to bottom a substantial amount. Further inspection showed the play in the wheel (hub) bearing. I purchased a replacement hub assembly from the dealership and will replace it tomorrow.

Again Thanks to all, Chuck E.

Looks like you would have felt something in the steering wheel.

No indication of vibration in the steering wheel and it wasn't constant. That 's why it was so strange.
