I totally agree. My Dad and I have done a good deal of engine work but not quite as "complicated" as the Pathfinder engine. We had a friend who does a lot of late model work come over and look at the timing set up before going back together just to be safe. Mine, due to tension, turned at the camshaft as well. To my recollection, even after marking all the chains and sprockets with a grease pencil, the best help was to look at the factory timing marks in the manual. Our guy who helped out double checked those for us and all was as it should be. This is not a super complicated job. It's just one that you have to make sure everything is in time before going back together.

Thanks again for all the help from all you guys on the forum. It made this much easier to do.
Jim

Great write-up, great collaboration by all. Very informative.

Ok. My turn. Last couple of drives I started hearing a whine. Suspected maybe the radio and speakers. Radio to OFF. Nope. Whine still present. In the garage, I pulled out the stethoscope and checked the alternator. Nope. Front engine cover - specifically the left side. Soooooo, I'm putting parts in a shopping cart, and wondering about the two tools.

Anyone have the tools, and still in like new condition?

Thanks.

Sorry, I made some homemade tools and used them...they worked but I wouldn't recommend that. One sure way to check for the problem is to pull your serpentine belt and see if you still get the whine. But it sure sounds like what mine did when it developed the problem. Mine started whining around 50K or so. The new tensioners are much better as you can see in the pics above.
Best of luck.

Yeah, I had considered to removed the belt for a sound check. Didn't feel like it, and have no doubt the guides are worn. I'm psyching myself for the job.

I much prefer to work on my motorcycles.

I don't think I will attempt this repair myself; however, I no longer feel a need to rush into getting it fixed, since the estimate is $1,500, and Nissan is offering no assistance (1 year out of warranty, but only 53k). Thanks for the information.

Is is necessary to drain the oil to perform this repair? Thanks.

You don't have to drain it to do the repair, but I would recommend changing the oil and filter anyway.

Default Primary chain

I have not seen many replace the primary chain. The truck I'm repairing - 2007 Pathfinder with 81,000 miles, the primary chain has been rubbing on the bolt for the guide on the left side. The plastic piece is also broken off. On the right side with the tensioner the plastic is very worn.

I'm starting my repair this coming Friday after work, and will continue over the weekend. I'd like to be done sometime Saturday, if possible. I have all of the chain guides on hand which includes the one in the picture above as well as the two longer ones. The water pump is here as well.

Check the primary tensioner to make sure that it is moving freely. I went ahead and changed out the primary chain and guide since I had it apart and did not want to go around chasing parts during the repair. When replacing the water pump, remember the 2 "O" rings are different. One has a white mark on it for ID.

keep us posted

I replaced that guide on my engine which had over 200,000 mile on it, just to make sure since it is listed as the tension side. In reality-It had very little if any wear on it. If you haven't done so already you need to look at the slack side tensioner (left side looking at it) for the primary chain to see if it's out far enough.

The adjuster is out pretty far and the chain still has slack...

Default primary chain slack

I concour with jlg2002, I found very little wear on the guides.

are the 3 primary chain guides severly worn with grooves in them? If not, then it looks like the primary chain is streched out and worn. I compared your tensioner photo to the one that I posted and just by eyeballing it, the extended length appears to be similar, but in my case, I did not have any slack in the chain.
Check to make sure that the over travel clip on the tensioner piston is properly set.

keep us posted.

I also noticed that the upper chain guide was removed in your photo - you do have one for there right? in review of your photo, in refeference to my install, I had about 1/2" less tensioner extension so I think your chain is stretched and it needs to be replaced.
