Does anybody still have the Ring Gear Stopper special tool (J-48761)? I need one and am having trouble finding one in stock.

Go to the "knowledge base" section and you will find downloadable chapters in Adobe .pdf format for your vehicle. "EM" is the engine mechanical chapter you will need. You will also find a section for service bulletins, there, which has the Nissan service bulletin for the secondary timing chain noise and a lot of good info for the repair. If you want the whole service manual in a single download, I believe you can find it at NicoClub.com's site.
The ring gear stopper is really the only one you need. Sometimes you can find one for sale in the classifieds on site that focus on the 2005-and-up Pathfinders, Frontiers or Xterras. The was one for sale recently in the classifieds at TheNissanPath.com, so you may want to check there. As far as the tool that presses the tensioner foot onto the tensioner, I just use a set of Channel-lock pliers with a rubber cover on the end (to prevent marring the plastic tensioner) and press it onto the tensioner. A thin wire or bent, large paperclip can be used to lock the tensioner plunger in place, unless you are replacing the whole tensioner, then you won't need them. Kent-Moore makes the tool. You can go to their site at HandsOnTools.com if you want to get a new one. |

Hello, I am attempting to do this job for the first time.
I have some questions. Do you have to remove the right and left intake valve timing control covers? Also, where are the 2 O-ring seals (15066-2Y510 & 15066-5E510) located on the timing chain case cover? Thanks Last edited by clips97; 12-02-2015 at 09:01 AM. |

I have the special tool that holds the crankshaft in place and I'm considering not removing the valve covers to speed up the process. The manual says to torque down the exhaust sprocket bolts to 91 ft lbs and the intake sprocket bolts to 76 ft lbs. Using the special crankshaft holder tool, do you think those torque specs put a lot of strain on the primary and secondary timing chains when torquing those bolts down.

If you have the ring gear tool, there is no need to remove the upper plenum nor the valve covers. You'll put some tension on the chains, but they'll be fine.

Lately, one has better luck finding hen's teeth than finding that ring gear stopper! You'd think one of the tool manufacturer's like OTC would come out with one being that so many people need one to do their VQ40DE timing chains..

Is it safe breaking the crankshaft pulley bolt loose by bumping the starter

I can't recommend it, because I once saw someone do that on a VG33E engine and they broke the starter housing. You also have the chance of having the breaker bar come loose and go flying. But, the crank bolt is not the only issue. You will need to R&R the cam gears to replace the upper chains. The ring gear stopper holds the crank in place so one can torque the cam gear bolts (the timing chains hold the cams in place along with the crank held in place by the tool). The only other way to do this without the ring gear stopper is to remove both valve covers and hold the cams in place with a wrench (there are provisions on the cam to put a wrench) while you loosen and tighten the cam gear bolts. If you do it that way, it's a good time to replace the valve cover gaskets, PCV and/or spark plugs, as needed. It's also a good time to install an XTP plenum spacer, if it's something you've been thinking about.

I'm about to tackle this project, going to order my parts this week. On a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult is this? How long did it take you? I'm mechanically inclined, built several motors back in the day for my Mustangs, just want to make sure I have enough time set aside. Thanks, and great write up by the way....
