Thank you for posting this! I am wondering if having a lose parking brake could be the reason why my parking brake light comes on while driving my 04 Maxima SE? The light is not on when the car is started but comes on once being driven past 2300RPM. I noticed this recently and cannot figure out what the issue is but i do know my parking brake is not making as many clicks as it should be. Please let me know if the same procedure can be followed to adjust the parking brake on a 2004 Nissan Maxima. Thank you |

STPua incorrectly said, "Altima 2.5-(S) has Brake Pad's "NOT" Brake Shoes". Altima has 4-wheel disc Brakes and the rear wheels have small drums attached to the discs with Brake shoes for the parking brake.

In my 2005 Altima, the parking brake adjustment is a 10mm nut at the base of the parking brake handle, accessible with a deep-socket wrench, through a small hole reachable when the parking brake is pulled upright. Turning it clockwise will tighten the parking brake, reducing how far the parking brake handle will travel (reducing the number of clicks). The parking brake should click up about 7-8 notches with moderate effort. This is the primary way to adjust the parking brake.
As davidoo says above, the parking brake is inside the rear rotor - like an old drum brake but smaller. There are ports/holes on the face of the rotors, usually covered by a small rubber cap. Remove the cap and turn the rotor until you can see the gear inside, next to the springs. It's barrel shaped. Using a regular, slotted screw driver, you can turn the adjustment gear/barrel.. turning it 'up' will expand/tighten the parking brake shoes, turning it 'down' will contract/loosen the parking brake shoes away from the drum. I'm not sure when doing this would be necessary, because I thought the parking brakes were self-adjusting. |
