I have a 2002 frontier 3.3L. The thermostat needs replacing. Need help on replacement procedure. Looks like there is "stuff" that may need removal. Anybody been there?

Loose the belt idler pulley bolt and then adjust the idler adjusting bolt to remove the belt.

Once the belt is out, remove the idler pulley bracket, by removing the two bolt on the right side and one nut on the left side (Yellow arrows)

Once the bracket is out remove the radiator hose bolt and then the 3 bolts holding the thermostat housing. Remove housing, clean, insert new thermostat, add silicone to housing and install everything back.

Thanks so much for the info. Any tips on making sure ALL the air is expelled from the system? I understand that's a biggie!

I try to replace coolant with the rear of the car inclined down from the front. I then start the engine with a less than full load of coolant and let the thermostat open - signified by the top rad hose running hot (you may need to block the radiator airflow). From there top it off while its still running. Cycle the heater to full hot and let it run there for a couple of minutes. Then seal up the rad and top off the tank if needed. Recheck it it in a few days for levels in both the rad and the tank.
