Unhappy Help! I hope this problem will self correct

I was reading the codes on my 1997 Ultima and I believe that the "Freeze Frame" data and manufacturer specific enhanced data may also have been erased because b4 eraseing the codes the car ran fine now it sputters, lacks power and will hardly idle. Please tell me that the ecm will relearn the necessary data and return to its previous state of perfect running. the engine is the large 4 cyl. If not what do I do? Help, Help, Help!

Just a wild guess on my part is that using the code reader did not do anything to the ecm. However, maybe a vacuum hose or sensor connector got disconnected without your notice. I don't think a ecm relearn is required unless a part such as the MAF is cleaned or replaced.

Suggest you check for above issues and maybe re-check for present DTC codes.

Certainly, you didn't disconnect any sensor connector while the engine was turned on, did you? Nor did you touch the electrical terminal going to the ecm or sensor, which may have provided a undesirable static discharge.

Two common problems on this year altima are oil in the distributor caused by a leaking o-ring and intake gasket leaks.

My guess is that the code you cleared was probably a cylinder #4 misfire.

are you sure this is caused by a leaking o-ring on the distributor? or is the 'cause' actually something in the PCV system forcing oil out of the weakest link (coincidentally the distributor o-ring)?

The distributor leak is actually the oil seal on the distributor's shaft, which seals the oil in the top end of the engine from going into the guts of the distributor. I think the “O-ring” is really just a dust seal that keeps crap from getting in from the utside of the distributor.
