Default Sticking Clutch Pedal

I need some help. I just bought a 2002 Altima with a 5 speed. Every now and then the clutch pedal wants to stick to the floor. I've looked under the dash and see the pedal has a coil spring that returns the clutch to its normal position. I looks OK and the problem only happens enought to be an aggrevation :? . Has anyone else had this problem and gotten it fixed? Thanks.

I would guess that the hinge assembly may have a pinched or rough spot that occasionally allows the pedal to hang. Unless you can find the source of the hang-up, you would have to replace the entire assembly and possibly the cable as well. That might not even fix the problem. I would hope that it was not something internal within the transmission and the chances of that are probably 1:100 or more. If it was internal, the clutch would be broke and the car would not be drivable.

I would also guess that it is something somewhat simple in nature and possibly repairable. You can get a flashlight, lay on the floor and push the clutch in and out a few times and see if you see any friction or possible causes for the hang-up. It might be a backstop that prevents the clutch from being depressed to far against the floor. Just examine it yourself and if you can't find anything under the dash or under the hood, have a local mechanic take a look at it. Unless it gets worse, you may have to live with it until it does become worse and easier to locate.

Good luck with the problem and be sure and follow-up with an update.

Thanks!

JB

Default sticking clutch pedal

There is a technical service bulletin on nissanhelp.com that addresses a problem similar to yours and for the same year Altima you have. There is a POSSIBILITY that if your car is experiencing the same problem as in the tsb Nissan may not charge you to fix it if it is out of warranty but make sure before you decide and end up with a high repair bill.Try going under the ownership section on the website and click on the engine/trans diagnose and repair section and hopefully you can find it.Hope this is of help.
