Red face Erratic AC

2007 Altima 2.5 with 226K miles. AC cools very well; however, it recently began acting up with the compressor not engaging. When it does engage, it cools fine. Other times, while driving, the air is room temperature, not always hot/warm.
Any suggestions on a possible or probable cause will be appreciated.

Some of the probable causes.: 1) you may be having transiient high pressures on your ac condenser. You may need to inspect your radiator cooling system, clean the restricted airflow through cooling fins. 2) dirty cabin filter, or a malfunctioning refrigerant pressure sensor, or intake air sensor inside cabin. 3) the air mix door may be partially opening for the heater air distribution. 4) insufficient refrigerant. While a pressures gauge reading is not yet available for you at the moment, you need to do more observations like checking what coincides with the warm air that you feel, is the compressor engaged, are the big pipes cool, how is your engine temp, what are your ac settings, all those stuff. Good luck. 😊

Compressor clutch failures are common on the Altima. You need to know if the system is fully charged.

May be something as simple as the clutch air gap getting too loose to weaken magnetism enough to not pull the faceplate over. A simple reshim will fix that.

If the system is low on refrigerant then the clutch would have been cycling on and off a LOT just before it quit altogether.
