Default 2008 Altima push button, does not start

As the title suggests, my 2008 Altima will not start. When I press the start button, it makes a noise briefly like it wants to start, but nothing. Just a short bit of clicking, a bit of high pitched whine then nothing. All of the dash lights work. The brake lights light when the brake pedal is pressed. I have changed the stop light switch with no luck. Any ideas? Is it possible to have the switch seemingly secure, but not properly installed? There is another switch looking thing next to the stop switch, could that be involved? What is it called? Thanks.
