Default Service engine soon light now off

2004 Altima 2.5L automatic

-Service light indicated two codes one for VSS, speedometer and milage counter not functioning, and one for fuel level sensor. Would notice fuel gauge needle fluctuate up/down with car movement, up/down hill, and would stabilize when car in passive motion. Codes caused a failed smog test

- I disconnected battery and changed VSS. speedometer now working perfect, car seems to be shifting smoother. since reconnecting battery I have noticed service engine soon light has not returned; about 4 days now. Fuel gauge needle doesn't seem that erratic at all.

-If I was to re-attempt a smog check are chances high I would still fail due to not changing fuel level sensor? even though service engine soon not active? Thanks in advance.

It might pass, as long as the light is off and the system readiness tests are complete. It really depends on what your particular states inspection standards are, as some states requirements are different than others. The issue your having sounds like you have a bad instrument cluster, a.k.a. integrated meter assembly. Often, the solder joints will develop poor connections. There are a number of companies that do instrument cluster repairs; all you have to do is a little Google-searching and you should get a number of hits. R.T. Grim and Circuit Board Medics are two that come to mind.

If the light has not come back for the last 4 days, the chances to pass the smog test are very high, even though you didn't replaced the fuel level sensor.
