Check if catalytic converter has been replaced.
I have an 03 altima with 180k miles on it I bought at 160k. In my time owning it I've the only things I've had to replace are the serpentine belt, the water pump, and the alternator. No complaints about that. But as of late I've noticed a sort of metal ring when I accelerate, almost like the sound of dragging a metal bat along a chain link fence. I dont hear it when im driving only when i first pull away from a complete stop, and if I baby the throttle I dont hear the sound. I initially thought it was my timing chain but from under the hood it sounds like it lower. Ive read online and they say it could be something in the catalytic converter rattling. I know that cats on altimas from around this year are known to overheat and have parts sucked into the engine, but those vehicles typically fail around 120k miles, mine being at 180 makes me think perhaps a prior owner encounter and remedied this issue, but is there any way to tell if my cat has been replaced? and are there any good clues to look for to see has the motor been rebuilt? Has anyone encountered a similar problem?
