nissan altima 2010 - crank but wont start (brake hardens)
my car is having issues and i was wondering if anyone can help
when i go to start my car, the car wont start and the brake pedal will harden - i have to continue pumping the brake to get the car to start and maybe after 5-10 tries, it will start. the brake lights i noticed do not work when i'm trying to start or pump the brakes.. please help! i know this may be an expensive trip to the service dealer.. any help would be great! By the way, I noticed the SLIP, VDC OFF, and ABS lights are on.. Last edited by LIBRAGURL7; 09-11-2013 at 05:20 PM. |

I could be wrong but I think the brake pedal would have nothing to do with the engine not starting. all that happens when you pump the brake pedal when the engine is off is to deplete the vacumn from the brake booster(normal).
First thing I would do given the year is to call your dealer and find out about warranty. I would not let it go any longer because you may end up stranded and they may not want to cover it. |

Despite what Soapmyster says, it probably is the brake light switch either needing replacement or adjusting. The brake light not coming on is your hint. The same switch is in the engine start circuit.

I called the dealer and my warranty is up :(
If its the brake pedal switch needing replacement, any idea on how much that would cost to get replaced? |

Ok what would the brake light switch have to do with the engine startup? I ask this because I am not too familiar with the push button start and if it has it.
Do you have to press the brake to start the engine? |

Yes. All Altimas from 2007 on have keyless start.

Brake 'hardening' is something I have also experienced in my 2013 3.5 L v6 with push button start and it has prevented starter engagement/ activation until I really pressed on the brake to cause more travel .
There is some kind of vacuum effect that causes the brake pedal to 'harden'. I have not experienced it in quite a while |

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I would say the vacuum is bleeding off and causing the hard pedal. Or if the pedal was pumped after the last shutdown.
That would interfere with the effort to activate the shift interlock and brake lamps. |
