2005 Altima 2.5s starting trouble
Hi all. I am kind of stumped on this one.
My 2005 Altima 2.5l randomly wont start. It cranks fine but will not fire. After about 3 attempts it fires up fine, like nothing happened. Most of the time it starts with no problems, and actually has not occurred for almost a month but then today it came right back. twice today it would not start. I replaced the spark plugs last week and it made no difference. Is it possible it could be a crank or cam sensor? there are no codes at all. I thank everyone in advance for any suggestions. I have inspected the plug to the cam sensor and it is dry just to add Last edited by Soapmyster; 09-27-2013 at 09:09 PM. Reason: title |

As you mention, sound like a bad crankshaft or camshaft position sensor. Have you checked for any codes?

yes it seems to be using some coolant with no apparent leaks.

Also engine was replaced with re manufactured engine approx. 60000 ago.( is this an inherent problem with these motors?)

It is common to see coolant leaking from the head gasket. It starts out as a small amount but usually get worse. Coolant leaks into the cylinders as the engine cools down. It makes it hard to start .

Thanks for the information(I think), do you think this means that I will be replacing a head gasket soon? Or possibly worse? But I think you are correct as the coolant has to be going somewhere and it is not visibly leaking. Thanks Again

mine is not using coolant. We took a decent trip yesterday and it still did it. but what confuses me is that once it fires it runs like new

Mine also runs fine once it starts, and it was confusing me also about when it would start up just fine and when it would have a hard time to start. But I have replaced both cam shaft and crankshaft sensors, spark plugs and coils to no avail. (another post on my problem said not to replace the crank shaft sensor unless your car is stalling when driving but to replace the camshaft sensor when it is hard to start, they are the same part on my car so you may be able to save yourself from buying 1 instead of 2). Hopes this helps you from buying parts you might not need.

Ok all to update this. Replaced cam sensor. Did not change anything.
I dont really know if replacing the crank sensor is the right way to go or not but I really wish the cam sensor worked. |

It is the same part so you can replace the crank sensor with the cam sensor you removed when you replaced it.

on my 2003 Altima the cam sensor is a lot harder to get to to replace, I searched you tube and watched a video(I would suggest this just so you will be able to know the location of the sensor). It is in a blind spot from above and very hard to get to from below. I went from above and did it by feel. Either way it will take you longer to replace than the other one. Good Luck I hope it works.
