1999 Nissan Altima Stalls, Rough Idle
My car randomly died while slowing down at a red light. I put fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank and this did not solve the problem. I noticed my gas mileage decreased tremendously, as well. It still dies while slowing to red lights or going under 2000 rpms.
At higher speeds it seems to jump, lose a bit of power, but it doesn't die. After the first trip to the mechanic, it got new fuel filters. After the second trip to the mechanic, it got a new fuel pump. Now, the car is smoking a light white steam. It also smells like something's burning. The dying problem continues, this happens while slowing down to under 2000 rpms. The gauge will shoot up and then drop suddenly to around zero and then goes back to around 1000 before repeating and eventually dying. Please help! |

ok no MIL.
1. ask mechanic if he did fuel pressure test. you have new fuel pump and filter. possible fuel pressure regulator and also test if injectors are working. 2. your symptoms could be idle speed adjustment, ignition timing adjust., IAC valve faulty or clog, EGR system faulty or clog. you just have to sort them one by one. maybe inoperable spark plugs. when's the last time you changed. also coolant temp. sensor might be causing your loss of mpg. 3. refer to the Symptoms Matrix Chart in Engine Control manual and discuss with your mechanic. manuals are in Knowledgebase section and you can download from here free. hope this helps. |

Intake gaskets are a common problem which will cause the rough idle. Also EGR valves are known to stick open also causing rough idle. Is the coolant level dropping? May have a head gasket leaking into a cylinder.(hence the white smoke)
