Update-Apparently there was a warranty extension for this issue that expired in 2015. In March of 2017 Nissan began a service campaign to fix this issue on certain model years (I think it is 2009 and 2010). Parts are labor are free.
Other good news is that if you paid to have this fixed in the past I believe that they will reimburse you. Nissan says that they have the right to discontinue this program at any time. This just happened to me of Thanksgiving day so I have not verified that this program is still available.
The new part will no longer lock the steering column, but that's not a big deal for me.
p.s. I tried the "banging on the steering lock mechanism" trick and it did work, so I was able to get the car home.
