Hi,

Sorry to hear that you are having the same issues with your new car. My car just hit 3,000 miles and it is back to doing the same thing as far as excessive noise during acceleration as it did from day one. It also has developed that high pitch whine in the power steering pump that you speak of so it sounds like we both bought a bad batch.

The way things stand here and how this will be handled is as follows. In a couple weeks I will be going back to the dealership to test drive another 2013 Altima with the same engine. I will be doing this with the sales guy and have him listen to how both cars sound. I know that there will be a difference because i have heard other 2013 Altima's that were quiet. Once I have that done Nissan will have one or two choices.

I will sit with the dealership's head manager and remind him that his service manager told me after keeping my car for a week and replacing a few things, the car was fixed and sounded like every other Nissan. I took the car home and within a day called him back and told him that I did not like the way it sounded. In fact I told them that I had a 2000 4Runner with 150,000 miles on it that sounded quieter. The response from your service manager was that there was nothing more he can do and it now will be in the hands of Nissan. So I met with the Nissan Rep. who after a two minute test drive told me that my car had a problem. I told him that I found that very interesting because your service manager just told me that the car was fixed and there was nothing more that the local dealership can do and now your telling me that your manager doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. That alone will cause some attention... The Nisan Rep. kept the for a few days and replaced more parts and told me that everything was fixed. I drove it home and it did sound better but not the way it should be. I called my sales guy and he suggested driving it a little longer to see if things smooth out on it's own. I agreed to do that and with the car just hitting 3,000 miles, it's time for Nissan to make a decision because now I have both the service manager at the local dealership and a Nissan Rep tell me that the car was fixed.

My request will be that they order me another car with the exact same specs that I bought or the car will be turned over the the Mass. Lemon Law court. This should also be an option for you as well. In MA, if the car is brought back 3 or more times for the same issue and they can't fix it, which obviously they can't, Nissan will be forced to give me back whatever I paid for the car, plus whatever the value was for my trade-in, plus whatever the value is for loss of time and gas to continue to bring the car back for the same issue, plus I will no longer have to pay for the car which now means that the bank will be involved and in the end, it will make both the dealership and Nissan look very bad because it will go on their records that they sold someone a lemon and refused to admit it.

All of this will come to a head within a few weeks and I will keep you posted. Thanks for writing back.

Bob

So, after buying a used aAltima with only 4k miles I too ran into the same whining noise. I checked the VIN and it was assembled in the Canton facility. (And here I thought cars assembled in the US would mean higher standards of quality.)

Did you have any luck acoustic?

1 year later, this car is about to be put in the hands of a Lemon law attorney. I have already been told that it will apply to this car. I have had the belt tensioner replaced by the dealership and then again by a Nissan service rep. that Nssan sent down. 1 year later it sounds worse than it did before. The high pitch whine coming from the power steering unit is still there. I will not back down until i get 100% of my investment back. I even had the owners of the dealership contact Nissan to take the car back and they refused. So now, they will have to deal with the lemon law lawyers. This is a car company that just does not care about their customers. This was my first Nissan and it will be my last. This car is all smoke and mirrors.

Default Altima Nissan Altima Sedan Discussion Forum

I hope I am posting / replying to the correct thread...

I am leasing a 2013 Altima. after saving and taking public transportation for 7 years, being a single mother only allowed me to accumulate 4000.00, not even close to a decent down payment for a purchase with affordable payments. So, leasing was a good option for a nicer car. Second stop Dorito Bros Nissan in a walnut creek ca. Test drove a white one fell in love asked for the EXACT same car in black they had it I said I'll take it. Never saw it up close just go by as they brought it to detail to clean it up as I completed the paperwork. Finished paperwork went to do my walk around and the first thing I noticed was it seemed to have a lower sit all around and longer front but not by anything too noticeable and after asking others ... They noticed it too. Anyway, I documented all of the scratches on the exterior of the car and was quite taken back at how many there were and was assured they would send it through detail properly this was a quick visit he said and next time they would buff all the scratches out permanently I agreed. Getting in the vehicle I noticed there was no navigation as the white one had that I text drove... He said oh you don't need that I said I wanted it and expected it as you said this was exact. He said well if you want to come by tomorrow we can see about getting that but as of now this is the car I signed for and agreed to... This my friends is the beginning to my concerns with this car. I don't know if it was intentional to give me this car but either way after an entire week of complaining to an overwhelming feeling of frustration this was one of a few issues I had encountered. Nothing was ever done I was stuck with this car no navigation as I was told there was. The next thing was the sound I was constantly hearing as I drove ... A wind high pitched bubbly thumping sound coming through the stripping which was found to be defective and to this day has never been fixed. I was hit on that door and a new one out in so now you just notice it coming apart up top and back too where it is still not right. I gave up after they had my car twice one time for a week and 4 of those days were because they were just waiting for me to call to see if it was done because the parts were ordered but they had no idea when they would arrive. It's been 2 years and I still haven't been called to tell they had arrived.

Thought the 2 years I had life changes which brought me from 10,00 a year to 25 plus thousand miles each year so my car has 60,000 miles on it. Yes I have driven a lot of freeway miles. I have had no real problems with this car. The air never really got that cold, the rear defroster barely ever worked that great and the car itself just never really felt like it wanted to go past 65, it sounded like a lawnmower. So much so that everyone who got in my car would ask why it sounds like it's struggling. I said I think that's just nissans idk it runs great no lights no problems and no concerns when tuning it up were ever brought to my attention.

The last month I have had little things like it die at a light or when I'm driving bog out and jerk but I just thought it was bad gas or my battery for the times it died. I honestly had no clue that there was anything wrong no lights nothing well when I was at the grocery store I turned it on it barely started and when I put it in reverse to back up it wouldn't go. Waited 39 min turned it in it went ok just slow. The next day I drive it to work 20 miles or more from my house. But was shaky I drove slow I made it. Brought it in to a transmission specialist: it's completely undrivable: I was told it was the worst he's ever seen and this is nothing I could have prevented. I don't have the 9 thousand bucks it's going to take to fix and I have no idea what to do...

Any suggestions ..,

Default engine transmission noise

There seems to be a common complaint about the noise level on the 4 cylinder 2013 Altima's that seems to be coming out of the engine / transmission. It's frustrating for those that are dealing with this because it was not an issue with the 2012's and it is also not an issue with the six cylinders. I dont blame the local dealers because most of the sales staff did not have any idea what the 2013 would bring except for what they found on-line and in the brochures. Basically the same information the consumer can find on their own.

This low rumbling sound during acceleration became annoying to the point where I brought it back to the dealer and drove another Altima with the same engine to compare them both. Surprisingly, the second car did not have an issue. After many conversations between the service manager and Nissan headquarters, it was determined ( listen up ) that the first group of Altima's that were shipped out had an engine belt that was the wrong size. The result was that a loud obnoxious rumble sound was created during acceleration. The second car that I drove had the correct size belt so that was fixed by Nissan before it was shipped out. This seems to be a known issue at Nissan but for some reason there is no recall, which clearly needs to happen for the early released cars.

Now that the rumble noise is gone, I am hearing a new sound which is a high pitched whine coming out of the engine compartment. This seems to be another known issue because many people have contacted Nissan about this and the comment that most people are sharing is that Nissan's response was " the sound is coming from the power steering motor and it is normal " if that is true, it is a slap in the face to every customer that they have because they think we are that stupid to believe that we are supposed to be hearing a noise like that on a brand new car, especially after paying $30,000 for it. Nissan needs to address this issue as well.

To sum up the the 2013 Altima, I would say that it is beautiful both inside and out but after already having two recalls, and now this belt issue , plus the whine from the power steering unit, I would never recommend this car to anyone until they get their act together. I believe Nissan truly cares about their product but in the case of the 2013 newly redesigned Altima, they should have waited to release it until is was mechanically ready.
I am not a car mechanic at all. Is this belt interior or exterior to the engine?

My question is, What was it the transmission mechanic said was the worst he has seen that will cost $9k to fix. Document everything that was said, what the issues are and write them down.

When you drove to work the engine was shaking and going slow according to you, it seemed to me like a Misfire and car was in Limp Mode. Is the Check Engine Soon lit? If so, have someone scan the on-board computer for trouble codes. Get a proper diagnosis before starting any repair. Also the car is under Lease, if the lease is up soon just turn it in and get a new one.
