Exclamation bled my 09 altima brakes - now abs, vdc off lights are on and no power brakes

hi guys i need help. thanks in advance. i bled the brakes on my wife's 06 pathfinder with the engine running, and she was sitting in the driver's seat to pump the brakes and hold the pedal down while i cracked the valve open to bleed. i've always done it this way with no issues on a lot of different makes and models. (now i'm reading that the vehicle should not be running and possibly abs should be disconnected.) well i followed this procedure on my 09 altima hybrid and i could feel the abs actuating when i cracked the valve open on each of the rear calipers. this alarmed me so i immediately closed the valve and moved on. now, i have no power brakes and all of the lights on the dash are on; abs, vdc off, and one or two more. the abs pulsed while the valve was open but stopped as soon as i shut it so it only pulsed for a second or two at most on each side. there is no way i overheated the abs actuator but i've definitely screwed something up. now the pedal is very solid but the rears lock up if you brake really hard and i can tell i've lost power braking because the brakes are no where near as sensitive as they used to be, they require a lot more pressure before the car starts to slow down. i disconnected the battery and waited 45 minutes before reconnecting but that did nothing. the fluid is topped off right at the max line. i don't know what to do and can't afford the dealership. is there a procedure i can do to turn the lights off and re activate the power brake system? thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer me.

The sensors may need to recalibrate. Have you tried driving your Altima? if you haven't try driving for a few minutes, while driving try to get the speed over 20 MPH for at least 60 seconds. If the problem persist unfortunately you may have to take it to the dealer.

Also you may need to clear the codes that you set. If vehicle running and you open bled screw pedal goes to floor. It is possble that the signals was sent to th controller thinking it was in a slip condition causings your problem. Also check your fluid level. Thae hard pedal with no assist sounds like the actuator on the abs module is on.

You can't bleed the brakes that way on the Hybrid. Bleeding requires the use of the nissan scan tool to activate the brake system for bleeding. It doesn't have a conventional master cylinder.

Why were you bleeding the brakes to begin with?

thanks for the replies, guys.

steveatl: it seemed like a good idea at the time but now i wish i had left it alone. i installed new rear pads and thought i would go ahead and bleed off any potential air in the lines but the pedal was already solid so i should have left it alone
NissanTech: yes i have driven it at highway speeds and nothing has changed. is there another way to recalibrate the sensors?
mpe235: i was afraid one of you were going to say that! i'm about to call nissan dealership and make a service appointment
streamcast: how do i clear the codes? are you and mpe235 talking about the same thing?

thanks a million guys

You can use a OBD2 scan tool to clear codes on your vehicle. As a matter of fact you don't even need to purchase one, i'm sure any local auto shop has a scan tool that can easily clear the codes for you.

Clearing the codes won't fix he problem. The brakes will have to be bled properly before they can be cleared.

Honestly any vehicle with abs I leave off while bleeding. You do not want the abs to interfere with the bleed procedure.
I would try to bleed manually with the key off

Sorry to bump, but I'm experiencing the same EXACT problem, except I didn't bleed my system, I just changed the front pads and rotors, jbowman502, how did you end up resolving the issue? Thanks.

how is the brake fluid level? if its low it will set the light.
Try to disconnect the battery for at least 30min or overnight

The fluid level before, I didn't really check, but I want to say that it was probably at the minimum line, because when I got the car from the dealership, all the fluid levels were at the minimum, now it is at the maximum line. I tried the battery method but for maybe 10-15 minutes, it reset everything else, but not the lights, you think overnight might do the trick? Something I saw that MAYBE might cause an issue was that I compressed both calipers at the same time, instead of compressing one, then installing and pumping the brake to readjust, then compressing the other and such. I had them both disassembled from the brakes at the same time. I had also started the car after I finished the first one side, to move the steering wheel, and had to recompress the other side's caliper. I know I may have done something wrong

if the fluid level is fine now, you can drive it and it might go off. If it does not go off disconnect the battery overnight and drive it for a few miles the next day. Its not a big problem

I also don't have power brakes, I have to really push to stop the car. Before when I would push that hard, I would feel the ABS kicking in, now when I press with the same force, no ABS, and the tires are actually squealing (which I guess is normal for the circumstances). Will the battery method solve the problem? O maybe a deeper issue? I also creep when I'm at stop lights and have to really pay attention to press the brake harder to keep the car still.

you will have to bleed the system out, there is most likely air in the system.
