Default Bad CVT

My wife has a 2009 Altima sedan which I think has a bad cvt. The car whines when I hit on the gas and the after driving a few miles it loses all power and I cant drive. If I let it cool for 20 minutes I can drive it another 3 to 4 miles before it powers down again. The whine almost sounds like it is stuck in first gear with some grinding.

This car is only worth about $3600 private/ $2000 trade in. The car seems to be a money suck now including I just replaced the steering lock from the dealer for $1200. I have read that a new cvt will cost me about $4000. I am a good diy mechanic and replaced truck transmissions but I would have to get a used cvt which probably has the same issue. Should I just donate the car or should I have nissan do the $189 test to tell me its a bad cvt. Thanks
