Default serpentine belt squeeking and smoking

I replaced my serp belt today and the damn thing started a loud squeek and smoke was coming from that general area. I didnt use the tension pulley because the nut was too strong to get off and started stripping so I decided to loosen the alternator.
After getting the belt on I readjusted the alternator but not to its original state because the new belt kept me from reinserting the bolt on the alternator. I felt it was tight enough and that the alternator was not going anywhere.
Should I do my best to bring the alternator back up and put the bolt back in?

Yes.

You should try installing the new belt by loosing the idler pulley, loosing the alternator is much much difficult. Try adding some WD40 to get the nut loose.

Is this a 4 or 6 cylinder?

Read my thread on changing the drive belt on 4 cyl. For 6 cyl., a bit different because In think you need 2 belts.

Thanks to a tip by Mod mpe235 that makes changing a breeze.
