Default Yet another rough idle thread

Hey guys.. I'm new on here. Just got my 2005 S-ER about 3 weeks ago. So a little while after I got the car, I started to get a rough idle and SES light (code 0300 and 0011). So after checking out the forums, I got the oil changed and reset the codes. One day later, same rough idle and same codes again.

I took it in to the dealership for a diagnosis and they told me that the VVT solenoid needs to be changed, because it was not retarding all the way causing the misfire.

So I had them go ahead and change it and reset the ECM, so that the car can relearn throttle close position and idle speed. After the change, the tech informed me that the new part is not operating properly because he thinks that the VVT sprocket needs to be changed.

Obviously, at this point, I don't know if I should trust them, because their first $600 fix didn't work and I don't want to spend another $1500 to change the sprocket, for them to tell me that something else needs to be changed.

Right now, I'm trying a fuel injector cleaner to see if that helps. What else should I check to try and solve this problem. And do you think I should trust the dealership diagnosis? Any help is appreciated.

The VVT could be the cause of the P0011, but the P0300 code problem could also be cuase by a bad coil. There is a bulletin for that code: Knowledgebase - 2005 Altima - Nissanhelp.com Forums

Have you checked the spark plugs? the plugs can also cause a P0300 code.

Hey.... Thank you for the response. I haven't checked the spark plugs as yet, because I've been told that the 0011 is what is causing the misfire. When you say the VVT, are you referring to the solenoid or the sprocket? I've already changed the solenoid with no luck. I guess right now I want to make sure I eliminate everything else that could be causing the 0011 because I don't want to spend 1500 at the dealership only to find out that it is something else causing the problem. Can u please let me know what else I can check?

Try the O2 sensors....Are you burning a lot of gas? Also, an injector could be stuck open..If that is the case, injector cleaner won't do anything because injector cleaner cleans clogged injectors...a p0300 is simply a multi cylinder misfire...let us know..
