Default Master Key?

Dear all,
I have a few questions that I was hoping everyone could help with.

I purchased a 1998 Altima a few weeks ago and really like my car. It fits my family really well and gets really good gas mileage. Being a family of 5 and being 6'5" makes it hard to find a smaller car that works for me.

Having said that I have a few minor issues I need to resolve.

The biggie is the the fact that I am having trouble with the key. I only got one key from the previous owner. I have had copies made at three different places and the key usually doesn't work correctly. Sometimes I even have trouble with the one key I have. Is there some way to get a new "master" key? Can I take the car to the dealer and with the VIN get a new master made or ordered?

Also I read about the P0420 code. I know that the car has a crack in the exhaust manifold. I am replacing it this weekend. Can the crack cause the code? I have a receipt from the previous owner shower a cat replacement, but not listing which one. Should I be concerned? Should I contact the dealer and see if the recalls were done? Is there even a recall for the 1998 Altima?

Thanks for any advice.

Yes, the dealer should be able to make a key for you with the VIN.

It's possible.

I'm not aware of any cat or exhaust recall for your 98 Altima.

Thanks for the reply.

I will give you an update later.

Can you do the key? I am in the Victorville area, not that far from Van Nuys.

Unfortunately we can't cut the key, but we certainly help you diagnose the P0420 code for free.

My local dealer states that he can't get that key by my VIN number. He recommended a mobile locksmith. Is there maybe another dealer that would have it? Do they assign different numbers to different dealer? Is the locksmith my only hope now?

If you can't cut the key then don't waste your time here and there, immediately talk to an automotive locksmith and have the new duplicate key. There's a locksmith in stamford ct who recently made a new Nissan key for my friend and price is very fair. So, visiting them is a good choice.

I advise you to contact them - Locksmiths London . They perform a fairly large range of locksmith services. I like their speed of response to requests and the speed at which they perform their work. It is worthy of respect. I also cannot keep quiet about their pricing policy. These are affordable services for everyone who needs such services.
