Default Altima 2000 instrument cluster blanking out! HELP please

I have a 2000 Nissan Altima. My Speedometer, odometer and RPM gauges are blanking out every so often.
They work fine on start up but reset to zero after about 5 miles of driving. Any help please?

to Nissanhelp.com forums!!

Unfortunately there is not an easy solution for your problem. Is possible that you have a loose connector, a broken wire or a loose fuse. I recommend to start by checking all the fuses. Make sure the fuses are fit tight and not loose. If the fuses are OK then you should remove the instrument cluster and make sure all the connector are secure.

lol.. yeah start with fuses. the most common thing with symptoms you describe is a bad/loose ground wire somewhere.. check and clean your battery connections while you're at it.

Slso i notice that it usually blanks out after hitting a pot hole and after about 30 minutes its back on again. I would think that changing the speed sensor would not help much.. if you have any ideas let me know and thanks alot

That's another indication that one of the connectors, fuse or wire is loose.

i have seen the printed circuit on the back of the instrument cluster crack and cause problems before.

it could be the cluster plug in, could be just the main ground of the car, check and clean your battery posts.

do these have voltage regulators for the dash? if they do then that could be an issue too. i'm betting it's something loose though.

I agree with dre351. Probably a printed circuit problem. On that model you should be able to buy the entire gauge cluster as an assembly.

Before ordering a circuit board, check the flexible ribbon harness connector at the back of the cluster to see if it's possibly loose. You might want to carefully release the connector and readjust the ribbon harness and make sure it's tight. Drive your vehicle a few days and see if it re-occurs before ordering the board.
