Hey guys, so about a month ago I started noticing a weird whining noise coming from the front drivers side of my car after a road trip. It's a weird noise to explain but it essentially sounds like a remote control airplane motor or a go-kart when accelerating and decelerating. I had my Serp belt replaced about 5 months ago so it's not that. I also have started to hear a rattling noise when I start my car and goes away after 30 seconds or I put it in drive. Some said it could be the heat guard but I don't know. It's not the engine rattling but something is under the hood and very noticeable.

For under $15. get a Automotive Stethoscope. With engine running, start probing the valve cover, alternator, timing chain cover, a/c compressor, power steering pump, etc.

I've had whining sounds from power steering pump when it is low on fluid. I've had vibration or rattling sound from a old stretched very dry serpentine belt. Also from the heat shield that vibrated loose.

1. It means you have a leak in your P/S system. With a good flashlight check the backside of the P/S. Also follow the high pressure line to the steering rack and the return line and you should be able to spot the leak. If it is the P/S pump leaking oil, it's likely worn gaskets as its the only serviceable parts. Or replace with a new P/S pum.
2. Replace the serpentine belt and tightened the heat shield 10 mm mounting bolt. |

You should say, "attempt to tighten the heat shield 10mm mounting bolt." Most of the time they are so rusted they'll break if you try to turn them. In that case, get some metal, worm-gear clamps and install around the shield to secure them. If it's on something large, like a catalytic converter, you can get large clamps at Home Depot and Lowe's and such places; I usually find 10" diameter clamps to work well in many of those cases.
