Well, I have finally given up on my mechanic; I have lost faith in his ability to correctly diagnose problems with my Maxima. This began before the power steering whine problem, but this issue has only made things worse. His most recent suggestion was to get ANOTHER reman pump, which he did. It did not fix the problem. He is obviously 'parts-swapping' in hopes of finding the problem. I have asked him to put back my original pump and refund all my money, which he has agreed to do. According to him, nothing was damaged during the original pressure hose replacement, yet he cannot explain why the whine would INSTANTLY appear after the hose replacement. He has replaced the aftermarket pressure hose with a genuine Nissan hose, and replaced the pump twice, and the whine, along with a periodic growling sound during low-speed turning, are still there. After I get the original pump back (supposed to happen tomorrow) I'll probably take it to a dealer, or at least a different shop.
