Default ECM Reset

Hi Everyone I'm new to the site , I'm a senior citizen and retired veteran of the RCN( Royal Canadian Navy) I own a 2002 Altima S 4 cylinder which is spewing black smoke, my mechanic, whom i have implicit trust in, cannot find the problem and told me it is very likely the ECM and he can't find a used one that will fit, I too have searched and can get an R & R( Repair & Return) done (I would have to send it to Ohio from Canada). I've read that it is possible to do an ECM reset, if that is done will the ECM need to be reprogrammed or will the vehicle still work, but have to relearn things like idling etc. Any guidance on this issue would be gratefully appreciated.
