Question 2002 xterra codes and does

At 113,000 my check engine light came on. 2 mechanics checked and said it was the knock sensors and torque converter codes. I noticed that when I got on the highway the car accelerated but at 60 mph held back a few minutes then shifted upward without any thumps, bumps, wining, etc. The knock sensors were replaced and the light went out. Within an hour the light came back on. Went back to mechanic who told me this time it was only the torque converter code. He sent me to a transmission place. I am now told that the torque converter is burnt out and I need a new transmission. On the way home I noticed, for the first time, a slight thump when I first started the car. By the way, the light went out. How do I know if I truly need a new transmission? Has anyone had these issues. I did notice when the light first came on it was after I filled my tank. Since then, every time I fill my tank I do not hear the air sound when I open my gas cap. Is any of this related?

First of all, there is only one knock sensor and unless the circuit is shorted or open, it will not cause the MIL to illuminate; it is usually discovered when another code causes the MIL to illuminate. Filling your fuel tank or lack of pressure escaping when you remove the gas cap have nothing to do with the knock sensor not transmission torque converter. It may indicate a possible problem with the gas cap vent or the EVAP emmissions system (ie canister vent control valve stuck open). This will usually set its own code. As far as the torque converter, the code itself may be the only indication that the torque converter has failed and/or you need a new transmission. Often when the torque converter fails, it will send tiny bits of debris in the transmission which will end up getting stuck in the solenoids. Sometimes you can see the debris if you drop the pan and inspect for debris at the bottom of the pan. It would help if you listed the trouble code that was retrieved.
