It is located under the intake manifold towards the back of the engine. You need to remove the plenum, wiring harness, fuel rail and intake to get to it. Just replaced the knock sensor on my brother-in-laws 03 xterra this past weekend. Took us five and a half hours to complete the job start to finish.

Holy Crap!! That long??!! I have to replace my Knock Sensor as well. I put that CarMD system diagnostic on my car and it showed P038. Which is the K Sensor. It shows in the Chiltons manual how to take it out. There's only something like 5 steps. Who knew it would take 5hrs. UGH!!

I'll get to it sooner or later. I'm having the Steering linkage recall done Tues and then I'm getting tires on Wed. It will have to wait another week or so.
