Default 2005 rear door won't open

It's in the closed position, you can hear the lock unlocking .. appears a cable of some sort has disconnected inside (from handle to latch) ... I'm having problems ACCESSING the inside area (or getting the darn thing in a "open" position) HELP!!

Are you talking about the tailgate? Does the key work in the lock cylinder?

When the lock cylinder on the xterras get corroded they stop working and the gate will not unlock. Replace the lock cylinder and it will work again. Of course you still need to get the gate open to replace the lock cylinder. You will need to remove the plastic panel from the inside of the gate and reach in and disconnect the lock rod. This should allow the gate to open with the handle.

It doesn't have a valet key. The lock is just seized.

We are having the same problem on our 07 Xterra. Is there any posts with pics on the steps to getting into the door panel to pull that rod?

Also, any good repair manuals? With motorcycles we use Clymer or Haynes. What is the best idiot guide out there?

Well, I climbed into the back and found the cargo net was crammed into the latch. (wife uses the Xterra for work.) So latch is fine.

The Manual question still stands though.

Default My solution to Hatchback not opening on 05 Xterra

I had the same problem with my 05 Xterra, I found that the lock cylinder was seized (never used it). When I remove the plastic hatchback cover to get at the asembly I found it to be very rusted and seized. I removed the rod coming off the lock cylinder and lubricated the power lock linkages to free them up. When I replaced the plastic cover, I drilled a small hole, the size of the straw on a can of WD40 at the location of the linkage, this hole is not noticable at all. I spray some WD40 on the linkage every spring and fall and have not had a problem with it for 3 years.
