Default Replacing that awful horn

The Versa comes equipped with the wimpiest horn I’ve ever heard. Here is how to significantly improve the sound.

Purchase a pair of loud horns. Check out some of the sounds on youtube, if you’d like. The louder the better, because the horns will probably end up at least partially shrouded/muted by the Versa sheetmetal.

Then, go out and buy an 8mm-20 nut at the local hardware store. Along with the nut, get 2 lock washers sized to fit that nut.. A tube of Loctite blue will come in handy as well.

Either buy or have handy enough wiring supplies to hook into the 4 terminals on the horns as well as hook to the 2 terminals in the stock wiring harness. Some of you may prefer to use a direct body ground, and that will work well also.

If you are just minimally careful, you should be able to do this without disconnecting the battery and having to go through the reprogramming procedure that requires. If you are a committed klutz, take out the fuse for the horn.

Remove the grill. There are enough “to do’s” on grill replacement so that you ought to be able to find one in a forum or on youtube. The only caution is that all of these people seem to be using a flat screwdriver to take out the retainers that hold the plastic panels. There is a tool for this, and it will stop you from nicking up the retainers.

Once the grill is out, you can see that the horn is held in by a nut.

Pull the wire connectors off of the horn.

Remove and save the nut.

Remove the stock horn and throw it as far as you possibly can.

Install the replacement horns on the bolt that originally held the stock horn and the corresponding bolt that has no nut on the other side of the center of the grill. Use the lock washers and nut you purchased along with the original stock nut for the stock horn. Loctite?

Fabricate a parallel wiring harness to feed the power from the green wire to the horns, and a like harness to feed the current back to the black [ground] wire.

Replace the grill and associated panels, and you are done.

All you need is the corresponding opposite tone horn from the OEM one, it being one half of a high/low tone combo. They started using one horn only on lower option cars years ago to save cost.
