Default diagnostic question

do i need to have a check engine light on to recieve a code from my dealers diagnostic equiptment?

Not necessarily, any independent shop or any one with an OBDII scanner can do it for you. AutoZone, for example, will read the code for you for free.

Certin code are stored in history within the ECM. so even if you did have a check engine lite but not now you may still retrive codes.
