sentra 2002 driver door does not open from inside

Please let me know how to fix a door (Nissan Sentra 2002) that does not open from the inside. It opens fine from the outside. Nothing hit it, it just seem like it takes 20 handle pulls for the latch to release. I have to roll the window down to open from the outside - because it is frustrating and dangerous. I called the dealer and they charge $125.00 to diagnose it.

You have to remove the door panel and check the connecting rod between the door handle and door lock. Most likely the door lock assembly is internally damage and needs to be replaced.

Here are some diagrams to help you remove the panel and check the lock. The yellow part is the door lock assembly.

Would I be able to check a speaker connection by removing the door panel as shown in thumbnail #1?
