1995 Sentra GXE 1.6L w/135K miles. Has surge problems..
1995 Sentra GXE 1.6L w/135K miles. Has surge problems particularly in traffic at idle when warm. Seems to be worst when outside temp is higher. No trouble codes logged. Replaced air & fuel filters, IAC (OEM), distributor (OEM) w/new cap & rotor, new water temp sensor (not guage sensor), replaced plugs with Nissan recommended. Also checked ALL vac hoses & connectors, removed & cleaned throttle body, used injector cleaner additive in a full tank of 92 octane & checked tank for debris (it's clean).
I'm lost for what to do!!! I'm looking for any help or suggestions as to what the problem could be? |

Many thanks. I did see the earlier post from Aug 2006. With that in mind, I pulled and checked all the vac hoses again today and passed an open (unlit) propane torch around the entire intake to see if I could find any leaks. I also did minimal checks on the EGR. All 3 appeared to be OK. I didn't check the fuel pump only because I didn't suspect a problem there ... I guess I could easily be fooled.
I did disconnect the battery for about 3 hours after I had finished the above checks. Upon reconnection of the battery, the problem disappeared. It has been idled and driven for a couple of hours without a recurrance. I sincerely expect the surging to start back in a few days to a couple of weeks. I got away with doing this once before. If the problem does resurface, as I fully expect it to, what do you think I should suspect ... the ECM? |

Hi,
I am having something like the same problem, except when my car gets to about 3000 or better RPM on the guage, the engine starts making the car lunge, like the engine is not getting fuel. I have replaced the fuel pump and strainer, and replaced the catalytic oonverter, but it is still lungeing at around 3000 RPM. Do you have any suggestions? Respectfully, Terry in Tennessee |

Problem returned
A month after disconnecting the battery to correct my initail problem, the surging returned today. I searched the threads for "surge" to no avail. Any ideas other than scrapping it?

I apologize if this seems like I am repeating the same question as the person above, but I have read the aforementioned links and I believe my problem is slightly different. I have a similar problem with my 1999 Nissan Sentra GXE (automatic). It has 65,000 miles. I recently had the crankshaft seal replaced, it was leaking oil onto the belts and causing them to squeal.
Driving from New Orleans to Tampa this seems to have solved my previous problem of the A/C squealing (and smoking, which I was told was caused by the oil leaking onto the belts and causing them to shrink and expand) but after driving for several hours during the midday heat, the car will begin to run rough, surging and not accelerating, though you can easily nurse it along until the next exit (but coaxing it above 60 mph is difficult). I had previously thought the problem was overheating from the leaking oil, as I'd refill it and it would be fine, but it's no longer leaking since the crankshaft seal was replaced, and perhaps my stopping to refill the oil gave it enough time to rest. I can normally tell when the problems will start, usually after around 400 miles of straight driving. Pulling over and letting it cool seems to work for short periods after that, every 100 or 200 miles. I bought this car used with 35,000 miles. Shortly after that, I had surge problems similar to the ones described above, and after taking it to a Nissan dealer they replaced the o2 sensor, which solved my surging problems. That was roughly 2 years ago. It runs fine day to day in the city, but I can only take these long trips at night without trouble. Thank you in advance for any advice. |

Thanks for passing along the threads to the other surge problems. I've seen both and don't think the second one is very applicable .. totally different engine (V6) and 5 years newer. The first thread is very similar. I have checked the large hose from the air meter to the intake and it seems to be OK. I checked the EGR (diaphram OK - holds vac), cleaned the ports and seat. I can't hear any vaccuum anywhere leaks either.
I haven't replaced the fuel pump or O2 sensor. Since the surging problem is sometimes intermittent, I really wonder if either should be suspect. The surging is much more pronounced when the engine has a load like the A/C. I'm open for most any suggestion short of the scrap yard. Thanks for the help and suggestions to date. |
