Help! ‘04 Sentra Broken Thermostat Bolt
Got a P0128 on my Sentra and figured I’d spend the $15 and swap out the thermostat last night.
When trying to remove the last bolt (the one on the bottom that you can’t see.. I don’t know why I always save the hardest for last) the head snapped off. Not having time to deal with it, I put the two remaining bolts back in and refilled my radiator. The stub seems to be fused to the cover enough to be holding ok and not leaking coolant. So I’m trying to track down a replacement bolt. Where can I find these and what size are they? I’ve searched the auto parts stores and can’t really find a match. Do I need to go direct to Nissan? Of course this is all hinging on whether I can remove what remains of the bolt. I’m hoping I can pop the housing off and hit the stub with wd-40 and grip it with vise grips. Anyone else have any tips/tricks/solutions on how they solved this problem? Much appreciated. |

I think the easiest way is remove one bolt and take it to NAPA or other parts store to match. Home Depot also has the sizing hole that you can thread your bolt and give you bolt size. Try use PB Blaster and spray liberally and over night if you have to.

If the bolt had a 10mm head, the bolt size should be a 6mmx1.0 metric bolt. If the bold head is 12mm, the bolt size should be 8mmx1.25. I would expect it to be 6mmx1.0, which is a very common metric bolt size. You should be able to find them at Lowe's or Home Depot in the hardware section or any auto parts store.
