Default 2001 Sentra overheating block damage

My friend's 2001 Sentra has a blown head gasket and was driven overheated several times. I know the head will need work but what are the chances that she damaged the engine block?

Default more on engine block

An ex-mechanic tells me that engine block damage is common when small 4-cylinders are overheated and that I am probably wasting time and money trying to fix it. I thought it usually did not happen.
