2000 Nissan Sentra Cats / Stalls
New here and think I need some help.
I have a 2000 Nissan Sentra with just shy of 100,000 miles on it. Recently the CEL came on and the active codes were P0420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)) and P0430 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)). This seems to indicate that the catalytic converter is bad, but does this vehicle have one or two and are they both pre-cats or is there just one on the exhaust manifold and another further downstream on the exhaust. I have also seen on other posts on this forum that there are certain VINs where the ECM should be reprogrammed. Is there any way to tell if this applies to mine? I called a local dealer, but they were unable to determine anything over the phone. There does not seem to be any restriction on the exhaust, but it does smell a little rich to me. It has also recently stalled when coming to or at a stop twice now, but I am not sure if this is related or not. Does anyone have any advice or answers to the above questions or any other possible solutions to these symptoms? Thank you for any help you can provide. it is proibably your O2 sensor(s). they control mixture, or rather give the ECU info on wht the mixture is. If they give bad info, engine can run too rich or lean. If that happens, then eventually the cat will go.

Thanks for the reply,
Would there not be one of the other codes present indicating a faulty 02 sensor? |

Also, if this is the case how could I determine which one(s) is it? I believe there are 4 on this vehicle and I have both error codes present.

There are additional codes that would lead me to believe the 02 sensor(s) would be bad before these. After some research I think I have accepted that the cat is defiantly bad, but I have not had the opportunity to remove the heat shield or anything to see what is actually there. Do you know if 1.8L engine a 2000 model is susceptible to the problems of cat fragments getting sucked into the engine that everyone seems to fear or is that only 2002 and later models?
Thanks again for helping! |

that's for the 2.5 engine, not the QG18. Just so you know, if it is the O2 sensor, and it is causing a rich condition, replacing the cat and not fixing the O2 sensor will foul up the new cat, too.

Would it likely be the 02 sensors before or after the cat that would cause this issue?

I had the same codes thrown on my 2.5 and removed the pre-cat by installing a new exhaust manifold without one and used an anti-fouler extension for the 1st O2 sensor. I have never had problem since (knock on wood) and no codes thrown since the Cat-Delete. I initially thought it would be the O2 sensor failing, but it turned out to infact be the cat.
