Default Can't clear check engine code for 2001 Sentra GXE

I can't get my check engine light to clear manually. I've tried the "turn key in ignition, pump the accelerator, etc." as instructed by Nissan, but the light won't flash indicating that I have gone into diagnostic mode as necessary to clear the code. Is there some special trick to this? Turning the key too far or not far enough? (I'm not turning the engine on, just to the point where the electrical turns on). Am I not pumping the accelerator fast enough? (I'm doing it as fast as I can!).

I thought I read somewhere that the 2001 model doesn't use this method for manual reading/clearing, but didn't get any instructions on how this model does work. Anyone know how to do it?

(I have the diagnosis from the dealer as to why the light is on, I just decided to fix the problem myself. The dealer had cleared the code at diagnosis, but of course the light went on again while driving home since it hadn't been fixed yet.)

Most auto parts stores have code readers avaialable that you can use to read and clear stored codes.

Next time just disconnect the battery for atleast 30mins or longer and that will do the trick.
