Cool temperature gauge not reading

For the last 6 months the temperature gauge in my 2001 Sentra SE hasn't been reading properly. It will either read normal or with stop working all together but never hot. The other day the service engine light came on with a P1126 code for the thermostat. I'm still able to get heat in the car but figured I would replace the thermostat and coolant temperature sensor since I read those are the likely causes for the service engine light. Should replacing both of these parts make the temperature gauge inside the car read correctly?

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Your thermostat stock -OPEN. Get one from a dealer.
That why you gauge is messing up .You Don't need to replace the sensors.
Just be sure your coolant is good.[5 years -you need new coolant]
GOOD LUCK!!!!!

If the themostat is stuck open would the car still be able to blow heat inside? The car seems to still be able to blow heat.
