What fuel octane do you run?

For 2004+, the manual recommends 91 octane, but I always run 87.

No engine problems to report at 43k miles. You?

With the price of regular running at $3.25 (premium is $3.55) in my area, I'll stick to 87 octane.

Definitely 87, today I fill up at $3.67 in LA, CA area.

87, if its not pinging, its fine.

87(with out ethanol) provide more HP and fuel mileage than 89 and 91, when tested at a local race shop 87 vs 91 dino proven 87 gave 15 extra hp in a 04 mustang, 13 in a 01 S2k...... also stay away from E10, E85, etc. ethanol robs fuel mileage and HP.

I use 87... I just put in a can of SeaFoam now and then (every 4 fill ups or about once a month) to help keep the system clean and running tip top... It is about $4 per can.

Pieman47 04-01-2008 09:33 PM

I use 89 recomends 91 and 87 is the cheapest. I like a happy medium.

Pieman47 05-06-2008 12:08 PM

WOW! Someone other than myself uses something other than regular, but they go for the top of the line.

Anyone in a high altitude area? I live in Colorado and we have 85 octane available here, and I've heard 85 is okay in cars that recommend 87 due to the altitude.

I have an 04 Quest, first day I've had it and I filled w/ 87.

see waht your manual reccomends. lower grade will cause pings in your engine

Coming from a 98 Maxima that kept ruining the O2 sensors I am a believer that cheap gas ruins the sensors in Nissans. I have committed to using only 91 or 93 even with the high prices. An extra $3-4 at each fill up is not much when paying 75. May equal out in the end to the price of the sensor but I won't have to worry about getting them replaced and get better performance. Win win in my eyes.

The 98 Maxima and current model Quest are tuned differently. My guess is the Maxima REQUIRED premium gas. The Quest is fine to run on 87 octane, at least that is what my owner's manual says.

BTW what is "cheap gas"? I'm curious because the last I checked all gas sold in the US had to meet EPA minimum standards.

mat_man1 08-19-2008 06:35 PM

I was referring to 87 grade as being cheap gas...not cheap, just cheaper than premium. The maxima says premium recommended but not required but I feel it should have been required. Live and learn. Recommended to me meant better perfomance. Ended up meaning less maintenance.

I'm with you. I had an 02 Maxima that we ran on 87 and had the same O2 sensors failing. As a result, I will always use premium in our Quest now.

?

Does the 2008 Quest share the same engine as the 2008 Maxima? If so, doesn't the Maxima require premium fuel?
