Check Valve --> replace fuel tank: Is this True or BS?
This is my first post. I have a 2001 Quest with 120K mi. Owned since new and used hard, but all maintenance done on schedule, including timing belt.
Current issue is Check Engine light is on and gas smell in rear left seat. Took it to dealer and they say it is code P 0455 Evap Gross Leak. Dealer is telling me it is a "gas tank check valve" and I need to have the gas tank replaced, for over $1000. The service advisor and service manager both insist this is necessary. This seems like BS to me. It seems unlikely there is an unservicable check valve inside the fuel tank. Based on reading the manual, it seems like it is likely to be the gas cap, evap vent control valve, or maybe the vacuum cut valve or vacuum cut bypass valve. Or a hose in the vicinity. Is there actually a valve inside the fuel tank which requires that the tank assembly be replaced? Could someone say for sure? I have taken the car home because I do not trust the dealer on this. Am I too untrusting? Please advise. |

You should get a second opinion, because there are more than one component that can give you code; or you can politely ask the dealer to have another tech inspect your Quest. Here is a image of the system and all the possible causes:
