2005 Quest Timing Chain clacking
Well the timing chain on my 2005 Quest is now clacking and making a very loud noise vice the whine. I am assuming that the slack side guide has broken at the top and slid down, like we have seen happen before.
I am looking at doing the entire job myself and will replace the main timing chain, all the guids for it, the tensioner and also the water pump, whil I am at it. Is there a good process to follow for doing this without removing the motor? Also any tricks/tips learned would be great. Also can you replace the main timing chain without messing up the timing? It seems to me that if you mark everything you should be able to just put the new chain on once the top and slack guides are removed. Is my assumption correct or just wishful thinking? All feedback and tips are very much appreciated. Thanks. |

I watched the video and it has a very good explanation on removing the cover and replacing the guides.
I was looking at also replacing the timing chain since I was already in there. Is this a good idea or just replace the guides? Also if I replace just the main timing chain do I need to re-time it is I ensure that both the crank and secondary timing chains stay in place? |

just did this on mine just replaced the tensioner side doesnt hurt to double check your timing marks before you put it back together and roll it over by hand a few time to recheck

A new timing chain will have plated or painted links that will line up with the appropriate timing marks on the gears. Refer the factory service manual for more information on timing set-up, replacement procedures, torque specs, etc. You can download the Engine Mechanical section of the service manual for free here:

I have downloaded the EM section of the shop manual and looked over the process. The process there calls for removing the valve cover to ensure that it is TDC on the compression stroke.
However I did watch another youtube video that showed a method for determining TDC on the compressions stroke. Does this work reliably? It seems pretty straight forward and seems to match up with some other videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w_xGYJwUjI If it works I will set TDC this way instead of taking off the valve cover, which requires removal of the intake manifold etc... I have noticed several saying they just replaced the guide but I am thinking that as long as I am in there I would replace all the guides for the main chain as well as the chain itself, tensioner and water pump. It takes quite a bit of work to get in there so why not. What are you thoughts? |
