p0340 camshaft position sensor
I received this code on a recent scan and I found that this is considered bank 1. When I look to purchase a new sensor online, every site refers to the sensors as front and rear. Can anyone tell me weather bank 1 is the front or rear?

Bank 1 is the rear.

i too received this code for my 2004 Maxima. i went to autozone and the code said camshaft position sensor (BANK 1). When Autozone pulls up the 2 parts on their inventory screen ... the only 2 choices are front or rear. They told me BANK 1 should be the front. So are they telling me the wrong information? I put in an order for the "front" ... should I call them back and tell them I need to order the "rear" instead? It only takes 1 day to receive the part when they order. I plan on working on the car on Saturday. Can you help me?

Bank one is the rear bank, against the firewall.

Not too bad, you can actually see the sensor.

Ok thanks again Jacko. I actually bought the BANK 1(rear) and BANK 2(front) but Autozone said I can receive a full refund as long as I don't install. So my plan is to replace BANK 1(rear) tomorrow and see if the Service Engine Soon light goes away and my car runs better and quits stalling out when i'm sitting on a hill or at a stoplight! Then hopefully I can return BANK 2(front) to Autozone for a full refund. FYI the rear costs $60 and the front costs $70.
I will keep you updated on the progress. |

well i replaced the bank 1 rear sensor. it was kind of a pain to get to, had to take the intake hose off and you have to have small hands to get back in there. service engine soon light is still on ... but i am thinking i may have to drive 50 miles until it goes off? so far so good ... im going to give it a few spins around town and see how it goes.

Replace the other camshaft sensor. There is a TSB for code P0340. If your car has stalled or is hard to start when warm, you should replace BOTH sensors.

I ended up taking my 2000 Nissan frontier V6 to the shop to get the timing belt replaced. The mechanic said I bent a valve while I while my timing belt broke, is that possible and they also wanted to charge me $2100 for the work. I'm getting screws, aren't I?

If the timing belt broke while the engine was running, which is usually the case, the chances are very good that all of the exhaust valves are bent from hitting the pistons. I have seen mild cases where only the valves had to be replaced and I have also seen major damage to the heads requiring replacement of the heads. It is a major repair tho.
